Counseling
Client Centered
Counseling is the process by which a client leads the process of self discovery while being supported and encouraged by a therapist. Carl Rogers, when asked about client centered counseling stated that “It is the clients that knows what hurts, what directions to go, what problems are crucial, what experiences have been deeply buried.” I encourage clients to become aware of their experience in the moment and then to move into deeper contact with their emotions and feelings. Through deep contact with thoughts and feelings, new patterns can be created, and change can occur. Change in the desired direction brings empowerment and a greater sense of well-being.
Gestalt Therapy
Gestalt therapy is based on expression and relationship. By being aware of your own experience, while being in relationship to others (such as a therapist or horse), individuals can explore how they relate in their lives. When we are in the present moment, aware of our experience, often our own patterns and behaviors will arise in session. Change can then occur in session and be integrated into life outside of the therapy session.
The goal of change is achieved through:
Increasing awareness of the present moment
Experiencing feelings and expressing emotions
Exploring patterns in relationship while in relationship
Integrating new patterns of behavior and ways of relating that can be applied outside of therapy
Experimenting with new ways of living life, clients will be able to live more fully and effectively, centered in themselves, yet able to open and be affected by the world around them.
There are many reasons why people seek therapy, including:
To move beyond a traumatic experience
To find support around loss of a loved one, job, or relationship.
To overcome addictive behaviors.
To express and process unresolved conflict with a partner, parent, friend, or child.
To confront difficult emotions such as anger, jealousy, or sadness.
To gain a deeper understanding of the self in relationships or in the world.
Some areas I have worked with in therapy include:
Low Self Esteem and Confidence
Depression
Anxiety
Sexual, Physical or Emotional Trauma
Grief and Loss
Attachment Issues
Parenting struggles
Difficulty developing and maintaining relationships
Inability to make contact or express feelings
Setting boundaries
Conflict
Autism and Aspergers
Life Transitions and Rites of Passage
